Environmentally friendly and efficient: smaller and lighter amalgam spheres for CFL energy-saving lamps
Over the past weeks, debates concerning the prohibition of the incandescent lamp in Europehas become increasingly dramatic. Manufacturers, professional associations, and environmental-protection organizations have increasingly discussed energy efficiency in lighting applications. Such interest groups have unanimously called for replacement of conventional incandescent lamps by energy-saving solutions. Appropriate European directives and national legislation are expected for the coming years. One of the recommended alternatives for incandescent lamps is the compact fluorescent lamp. The mass use of these lamps, however, has confronted manufacturers and users with ecological challenges. Since compact fluorescent lamps contain mercury and lead in amalgam form, it is necessary to carefully organize their disposal without any opportunity of environmental pollution. In addition, manufacturers are being expected to reduce environmentally polluting substances to a minimum, or, ideally, to substitute more benign materials. Umicore has accepted these challenges and has made major research and development investments.
